Tourists Allowed in?

Has anyone heard when they will start letting tourists back into Lhasa? The tour company my travel agent booked my individual guided tour with said that my trip in mid-May has been approved and that tourists will be allowed into Lhasa. Has anyone else heard this?

Tourists Allowed in?

I don%26#39;t know what newspapers your tour company is ready. The answer is clearly no. But who know about mid-may.

Tourists Allowed in?

What I%26#39;ve heard that there will absolutely be no tourist permits issued before May 10, but that does not guarantee that there will be tourist visas at that point.

And I%26#39;ve gotten the impression that nobody within China has the full picture of what is going on there, due to media controls.

So if your travel agent actually has your visa, I would ask them to fax you a copy of it for proof.

Check out your travel insurance cover before you book any trips to Tibet.Because if travel permits are not issued, you may not be able to claim any prepaid costs back!

Take care.

We have a trip planned which involved Tibet in mid/late May.

Talking to the agent today we were told that they are cancelling all April trips (no permits) and all May trips (permit situation unclear but many places likely to be closed and heavy security presence).

We were supposed to go there 24 April, looks like that%26#39;s out.

I haven%26#39;t heard anything from our guide in about a week.

Does anyone know whether the Chinese have allowed communications to open again?

Where did the info come from that indicates no tourist permits until after 10 May?

How very sad this is...

Travel agent just said consulate is saying that visas won%26#39;t be issued until at least April 21st.

Here%26#39;s an update from an agent:

';Yes, the news from Tibet is not good. Right now I%26#39;d say it%26#39;s unlikely that travel to Tibet will be allowed before the Olympics, and it%26#39;s unknown whether that will change after the Olympics. While a few sources told us that China would begin issuing permits again in April, we%26#39;re not optimistic and view the Olympic torch relay at Mount Everest in May as the first hurdle to cross. There%26#39;s a chance that travel might resume after May, but with each passing day and each new protest (and embarrassment for the Chinese government) we think there%26#39;s less and less of a chance that Tibet will be accessible before the Olympics.';

There was a post last week that had a link.

My regular travel agent in Macau says she has been told that no more Tibet permits will be issued for ';at least 4 or 5 months.';

We%26#39;ll see. Buried in an AP article found on LP Thorntree:

';While Tibet and neighboring regions remain off-limits to most travelers, the region%26#39;s tourist authority has decided to allow Chinese tour groups to return on April 10 and foreign groups on May 1 — the start of a three-day national holiday — according to travel agents who received the announcement on Tuesday.';
