Cashing American Express Travelers Checks in China

Hello,

I am departing for China this weekend and will be spending time in Beijing, Shanghai and Xi%26#39;an. I wanted to please ask fellow travelers where are the best places to cash American Express Traveler%26#39;s checks?

I am sure I can cash them at major hotels but usually they do not offer the best exchange rates and I do not believe there are American Express offices in China.

Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.

You do get very similar rates all over China, including hotels. Currency exchange is tightly controlled and is not part of the free-for-all free enterprise like most other places.

Even you stay in a five star hotel.They normally have a limit for the amount that you exchange. In Bank of China, the working staff speak very good English and know the transaction very well. As the above post said, in China the exchange rate is almost the same.If you exchange it into Chinese yuan, keep the receipt, you need it when you leave china and want to change it back into $.

Why use travellers cheques at all? They are out-moded and in site of Robert%26#39;s assertion, I have never met a bank teller who speaks any English. Use ATMs instead,

Credit card is defitely more convient.

But the question is that Mallonm carries some traveler check just in case.

Beijing, shanghai, guangzhou are more convient in banking

than small cities.
