I%26#39;m having a tough time picking a hotel to stay in. I%26#39;ve narrowed it down to the Purple Mountain on the Pudong side or the Astor on the Bund side. They are quite different in terms of star-ratings but that%26#39;s okay. Mainly the side of the river, Pudong or Bund, will dictate which hotel I pick. Is there lots to do on either side? Is it easy to get to the other side by subway? Anyone have any suggestions or preferences which side they prefer? I%26#39;d like to be able to walk out of my hotel and be able to see sights and also check back in to my room when I feel like it.
Appreciate any and all comments!
What side of Huangpu River should I stay on? Pudong or Bund?
Well actually it depends on hat u have in mind.In Puxi its much more noisier n the air quality is not as good as over at Pudong but it s much more lively with non stop activities thruout the day n night.At Pudong airquality is much better in fact it gives u a much cooler feling more relaxed n holiday ambience but u do have anumber of tourist atractions n some big shopping malls there too though i have to say that they r not at yr doorstep,so if u intend to do anything u may need to walk a distance or take a cab.Its equally easy to take the metro or a cab over to Puxi either by the bridge or underwater tunnels.Takes about 15mins to cross over to PUxifrom Pudong.The shopping malls like superbrand mall or Nextage r not right at Purple mountain.And if its like what u said u want to stay at a place where the actions r n able to pop in yr hotel whenever u can then maybe u need to consider staying in 1 of the hotels near Nanjing Pedestrian Street or Huai hai Zhong lu or Nanjing xi lu.Hotels like Central.Ramada Plaza,Howard Johnson at JiuJiang lu,Hongkong plaza serviceda partments,JWMarriot,Radisson,Bund hotel,Okura Garden r all in the centre of attractions to shopping.,food n also metro.But like i said these r the hotels in the busy n,popular area so it noisier but u wont be bored.In fact on the other hand transportation in Shanghai is very efficient n convenient so even if u decide to stay in Pudong its not much of a problem to reach the ares of attractions too.At Pudong best area to stay r like the Shangrila,Eton n the Hyatt.

Thanks Benny. What do you think of Purple Mountain? Is it a good place to stay? Metro station is close enough?
Hi Purple mountain hotel a 5 star rated hotl at Dongfang lu.Yes the Dongfang metro station is hardly few mins walk .Its a good hotel but the areas of attractions at Pudong r Oriental Pearl tower,Aquarium,Grand Hyatt,Binjiang dadao,Century gardens,Science n technology centre ,Superbrand mall,Nextage mall.U may travel by metro to these areas maost of them about 2 km away from the hotel.If u do not mind this its a good place to stay.
Pu xi would be way better, that is the place people really lives; Pudong is like La Defense of Paris; if you would have only interest in sky rising, stay in Pudong;
I would go with Puxi also. Pudong is predominantly a business district and a bit sterile feeling. The areas of Puxi that contain nightlife and shopping are The Bund, Nanjing road, Peoples square, Jing%26#39;an, the French concession. Anywhere in those areas would be a good location. Personally I like the old feel of the French concession.
I would suggest that you stay on the Puxi side for sure (ie the side that has the Bund) and preferably in the French Concession area, or the People%26#39;s Square area.
For ease of getting around you cannot beat the Radisson New World on People%26#39;s Square. It has a subway station right opposite, also taxi rank outside. Turn left from reception %26amp; your onto the pedestrian part of Nanking Road. Can also walk to Shanghai Museum in 5 minutes.
I%26#39;ve also stayed Pudong, the Hyatt was an experience but totally impractical as you have to take 2 elevators down and line up for a taxi, jostling for a position the whole time. I felt this was so much effort it took away the spontaneity of going out. Do go to the Hyatt for a beer though, it is an experience. Also the bar at the top of the Shangri-la looking over at the Bund has one of the best out looks in Shanghai, I%26#39;d definately recommend doing that.
Hi Amancga,
I would definitely recommend you to stay on the Puxi side as this is where everything happens. There are a few must see things on the Pudong side but that can easily be done in one day or less. When you go to the Pearl Tower (TV tower) which is located on the Pudong side I will recommend you to go to the Museum which is located in the basement of the Tower, you can buy a combined ticket. It is not a normal museum, its build like the Shanghai looked in in the old days, with small houses and people made of wax, you walk around in small streets, I don%26#39;t really know how to explain it, sorry for my lack of English.........but it is absolutely worth a visit.
You will love Shanghai I have been living here for 6 years now.
Hi i had many times stayed at Puxi n hotels near Peoples square n Nanjing pedestrian street r my favourites as they r so convenient,Actually u can practically travel around the whole Shanghai starting from here.Staying at this side is definitely very lively with nonstop activities but only difference is it is more cramp n air quality is not as good as in Pudong.So whenever my itinerary is not that packed only then i will stay atPudong.In actual fact both sides r good to stay as hanghai has a good network of transportation till late.But for beginners in Shanghai i will definitely recommend to stay at Puxi too.Most of the hotels offer quite reasonable rates with the rate slightly more expensive over at Puxi,but if to compare with many major cities in its league,Shanghai accomodation is considered among the best value.,compared to Tokyo,Melbourne or Hongkong.
