current situation

Any info regarding current situation in Tibet is highly appreciated. They say tourists couldn%26#39;t leave Lhasa because airport was closed.News agencies claim that tourists are not allowed to enter Tibet right now. Information about Sichuan will aslo help, cause many travellers fly to Lhasa from Chengdu.

Lonely Planet thorntree Tibet thread probably has more up to date info from posters - although be careful to see the facts from the fiction.

current situation

Travel to Tibet province %26amp; Lahsa should be postponed for your own convenience.

Sichuan province is home to nearly 100 millions inhabitans, I don%26#39;t see any incidents should flare up in the provincial capital Chengdu.

I m travelling to Tibet in early May...I just checked Torn Tree....they no longer issue permits to Tibet...hope situation will change soon...It would be awesome to hear from somebody who is actually there right now.

Hi Str8line, with the situation so sensitive at present any unauthorized reports of the Lhasa situation from that city could easily get this site blocked in China - better to wait for eyewitnesses to get out first.

Those who are planning to visit Tibet....Check this,it might be helpful....Cafe in Lhasa reopening tomorrow !

Mt Everest is closed to climb,no group visas till 10 th of May...let%26#39;s hope things will change... http://www.mounteverest.net/news.php?id=17115

str8line, I think you may want to rethink your travel plans.

The last time Tibet made the international news, because some foreigners started a small protest up there, visitors permits were tightly restricted. As far as I know, those restrictions were not lifted before this new situation.

If authorities have officially stated no permits will be issued before May 10, then NO PERMITS will be issued before May 10. It doesn%26#39;t mean they might change their minds. And that doesn%26#39;t mean that permits WILL be issued starting May 10. They could easily extend it long after that, depending on how comfortable the government feels. If they think new protests will start up at any time, they won%26#39;t allow visitors in.

I%26#39;d be willing to bet a small amount of money there will be no tourists visiting Tibet between now and the Olympics.

Well thanks for your concern anyway...I m arriving to Shanghai on May 13th,then going to Sichuan, will spend some time there and then who knows...End of May might be lucky...If not...there are loads of wonderful places in China,I might go to Yunnan instead... But I will keep on checking on Tibet...Surprisingly volunteer project in Tibet is still on!!!!
