Would you reccomend I book transfers from airport or get train/ shuttle bus?

HK is very safe to walk around even if you go by yourself. The most you have to worry about are the pickpockets in crowded places. Many areas are still active even past midnight, and it%26#39;s not a problem walking around at all.
How much are you willing to spend on lodging? For convenience, stay somewhere near the MTR lines. Tsimshatsui and Causeway Bay are popular areas with mid-range hotels.
There is excellent public transport to and from the airport, including trains, buses and taxi. The airport express train provides free shuttle buses to a number of hotels from the train stations. You can find more information on the hong kong airport website.

I%26#39;ll second Glacierfed%26#39;s comments about Hong Kong%26#39;s safety. I feel MUCH safer there than in even the most respectable areas of any large Australian city (and than in most of the towns for that matter). HK%26#39;s public transport is to die for, in coverage, frequency, variety, cleanliness, economy AND safety. The streets %26amp; even large parks are also very safe, even in late evenings.
