Mobile phone and buying a HK sim card

We are a party of 4 adults and 2 kids. It would seem a good idea to take a couple of mobile phones so that if the party splits, we can keep in touch with each other. I have a few questions that I hope somebody can help me with. We are intending to use them for local mobile calls only.

THe Peoples $28 card looks good. Is it as simple as replacing your Sim card and making a call? I have never done this before - it%26#39;s easy to tell.

Mobile phone and buying a HK sim card

Last month we bought 3 sim cards when in HK.

We bought the $98 IDD cards, so we could call home cheaply as well as each other.

Lucky we did, my 22 year old daughter got lost in MonKok, we had the map!

You must make sure your phones are unlocked or they won%26#39;t work.

You need to insert the sim ard, then call a number to have it activated. All the instructions are in the pack.

Yes, just replace the sim card and make a call, the card will activate automatically when making the first call.

Make sure the phones are not locked.

Using the local mobile networks is always a good idea. You can choose from a couple of network providers when in HK. Be sure that your mobile units are unlocked so you can use any sim card. My wife and I got the PCCW sim cards and we didn%26#39;t experience any hitches. A HKD50 preloaded sim should last you the whole duration of your stay if you%26#39;re not too heavy on calls and are used to using sms. If in case you should run out of credits, you can practically recharge your sim on the go by at any 7-Eleven or other convenience stores. PCCW also has vending machines in most MTR stations.

Forgot to mention that the peoples $98 IDD has calls to land lines in Asutralia free of costs except for .25 cents (HK) a minute air time, (about.4 cents AUD).

Great for keeping in touch back home.

The easytalk $28 Peoples prepaid sim card appear to be the cheapest

I did not see one for sale, however I didn%26#39;t purchase ours at the People shop. We bought 2 off super talk $48 and one IDD talk $98 discouted at Ap Liu in Sham Shui Po. We used it for roaming in China. In HK it cheaper to make a short call than to text.

On previous visit we purchased the 3 and before that Smartone prepaid. This time I purchased people because its cheaper and it our roaming in China (thinks its owned by China Mobile)

The ';Peoples'; IDD cards come in $60 and $98 versions. 0.25HKD/min local or LD calls to 30 countries including Australia(landline). Same deals from another network PCCW Mobile.

Hi

Just returned myself and got the Peoples IDD card ( got mine from 7-11 at airport when i arrived) Had it working in like 1 min. Liked the 0.25hkd to Aus calls.

It is also good to have a local number for tour bookings etc

Have fun in Hong Kong , I did !! 4th trip since 92

Will those pre paid cards also do for Beijing does anybody know?

yes, same .25/min including airtime.

We purchased New World sim cards $100HK each. We just put them in our phone and they worked. no activation. We made several phone calls to each other and to home in Oz and spoke for around 10mins each time. there are so many phone stores there in MongKok plus I believe you can pick one up at any 7/11 store which are everywhere.
