Chengdu travel

I am planning on going to Chengdu next month and I am wondering if it will be harder to get there with all the demonstrations about Tibet. I know that there is large Tibetan area in Chengdu that is now heavily guarded by Chinese police. Will it be harder, as a foreigner, to visit places that far west. I know journalists are having a tough time as it is in Chengdu. Any thoughts? Should I cancel my trip and go somewhere else??

In Chengdu? Or do you mean Sichuan province?

Chengdu travel

I am living in Chengdu, the Tibet demostrations have no impact on our life.

There are many foreigners and travellers in Chengdu too, the situation is not as much as you thought;

I already have plans to go to Wolong Panda Reserve from 4/14 - 4/19. My flight to Chengdu can%26#39;t be canceled but I know from what I%26#39;ve read, Chengdu is fine to visit now. Does anyone know if it is possible to get to Wolong to see the pandas now? If so, how exactly, what bus, details. Wolong was really the highlight of my trip cause I was so looking forward to hugging a panda and volunteering with them. If there%26#39;s any way to go about, please let me know. Of course if anyone thinks it%26#39;s dangerous and I shouldn%26#39;t do it then let me know that too! I really appreciate your help and suggestions as I%26#39;ve been so stressed with this.

The Panda research centre and breeding centre in the N.East of Chengdu is only 10 km from the city. They have Panda hugging and babies when I visited last October. Go early because they bring them indoors by lunch time if it%26#39;s hot (as it will be) where the view is not as photogenic.

I confirm that life goes on as usual in Chengdu. No reason to cancel that we are aware of.

What about the national reserve JiuZhaiGou?

And what about Songpan?

Are these places are safe too?

Because I want to by the flights and I don%26#39;t know what to do....

I have not heard of any restrictions for these areas but any area with a Tibetan population carries a degree of risk. It is highly unlikely that you would personally get near to any trouble, particularly as Westerners are not being targetted, but you could find yourself turned back by the police. I would check and double check both these areas before booking.

Your best bet is to contact a travel agent in Chengdu for localised informaton as they should have access to information not on the internet. They can also provide accommodation, guides etc. If you use a Western travel agent, even with offices in China, you will still find yourself with the local guides but local price will have been suitably inflated to Western expectations.

Here%26#39;s a good link about latest travel news in West Sichuan

But remember this info should be taken as a guideline - the word of officialdom can change on a daily basis in China!!!!

UK Foreign Office advice on travelling in China:

ChengduUK%26#39;s link shows:

Wolong (Panda reserve)

Open.

Songpan

Foreigners have been asked to leave.

Jiuzaigou

Open. Tourist groups are heading up there daily by road and air without hindrance.

We have seen no signs of tension in Chengdu or when travelling to neighbouring towns and cities. Any increase in security is not immediately evident so is probably focussed in potential problem areas.
